The earth can also be modeled as a spherical blackbody with radius 6.371 x 106 m and surface temperature 300 K. (a) What is the heat flux [W/m2] radiated from the sun at its surface? (b) What is the heat flux [W/m2] of the solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth? (Hint: the total heat transfer rate [W] through a spherical shell surrounding the sun should be conserved.) This number is called the solar constant (c) Assume all solar radiation reaching the earth is absorbed, what must the earths internal heat generation rate be in order to maintain its surface temperature at 300 K? (neglect radiation from the stars, but not the sun)
