Question: 3 the basic device for the measurement of groundwater head...

Question details

3. The basic device for the measurement of groundwater head is a tube called a piezometer. A piezometer must be sealed along its length. It must be open to water flovw at the bottom (the intake) and open to the atmosphere at the top. The intake is usually slotted at the bottom to allow for the inflow of water, but not the sand grains or clay particles that make up the geologic formation. The bottom of the piezometer is its point of measurement. In recent years, the simple piezometer has been replaced by more complex designs utilizing pressure transducers, pneumatic devices, and electronic components. But the fundamental measurement approach is still the same. Consider the field notes taken from a piezometer: Elevation at ground surface (above mean sea level) Depth of piezometer Depth to water 450 m 150 m 27 m Determine a) the elevation head (m) b) the pressure head (m) c) the total hydraulic head (h) the fluid pressure (N/m2)
