Question: 4 fun with chemistry effect of using synthetic fuels on...

Question details

4. Fun with Chemistry: Effect of using synthetic fuels on CO2 emissions: a compact passenger car that runs on natural gas emits 0.218 kg CO2 per mile driven. Assuming the natural gas is pure methane with an energy density of 50MJ/kg, and knowing that CH, +20,CO,+2H,O (a) What is the mass and energy content of the fuel consumed per mile driven? (b) Suppose the vehicle is fueled with synthetic natural gas that is derived from coal. Forty percent of the original energy in the coal is used to convert the coal to the synthetic gas. What is the mass of coal consumed and new total CO2 emissions per mile? Consider only the effect of using coal instead of gas as the original energy source, and the conversion loss; ignore all other factors. Also, for simplicity, consider coal as pure carbon.
