Question: a 15m wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 5...

Question details

A 1.5-m wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 5 m3/s at a depth of 1.5 m. At a section the channel undergoes a transition to a triangular section of side slopes 2 horizontal to 1 vertical. If the flow in the triangular section is to be critical without changing the upstream water surface, find the location of the vertex of the triangular section relative to the bed of the rectangular channel. What is the drop/rise of the water surface elevation at the transition? Assume zero energy loss at the transition.
