Question: a calculation of density density is a derived unit which...

Question details

A.      Calculation of Density

Density is a derived unit which is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume occupied by that mass.  Typical units are:  kg/m3, g/mL or g/cm3.

1.      Weigh the wooden block you measured in Part A using the balance.

2.      Determine the density of wood.  Complete Table 2. Include the correct number of significant figures and the uncertainty.  Write your final answer in scientific notation.  Compare your result to the accepted value.  Calculate the percentage error.  Comment on the accuracy.

Processing of Results

Table 1:  Results of block measurements

 Measurement  (to nearest mm) Uncertainty % uncertainty Length of block 140 $±$0.5 mm (0.0005 m) Width of block 65 $±$0.5 mm (0.0005 m) Height of block 23 $±$0.5 mm (0.0005 m) Volume (mm3) *Volume (cm3)

Table 2:  Results for density of wood

Measurement Uncertainty % uncertainty Mass of block (g) $±$1 (g) *Volume of block (in cm3) Density of block (in g/cm3) Density of block rounded to correct no. of sig figs

NB.  Accepted density of wood is:  0.6 g/cm3. * This row should be the same

Calculate the percentage error:  i.e., Percentage error =  measured value – accepted value  100%

Accepted value
