A motor weighing 600 lb is supported using two 1/4 inch thick steel plates 12 inches long and 3 inches wide. Failure is a concern so a high strength AISI 4340 steel (Sut = 170 ksi) has been chosen which was oil quenched and tempered@ 1000°F. Each plate is welded to a fixed wall as shown. During use, the motor has been observed to vibrate vertically due to motor weight. Vibration measurements indicate a vertical displacement of -0.020 inches for the motor. Assuming no concentration for the plate material near the welds, determine the factor of safety. The motor center of mass is 10 inches from the wall. 4. For the beam shown below, constraints dictate that the maximum vertical displacement cannot exceed 0.004 inches. Neglecting deformation of the small vertical member, what load F is allowable? The thickness of the beam is 6 inches and the material is steel (Es =30x106 psi).
