A rod is made of pure aluminum. The rod is 2 m long and 0.01 in diameter. Convective heat transfer coefficient between the rod and surrounding air is 10 W/m2K. Air is at 25 C and the surrounding wall:s are at 10 C. The rod is heated by internal heat generation (Ohmic heating or chemical reaction). The emissivity of the aluminum surface is 0.3. Heat loss at the two ends of the rod is also taken into account. (a) Determine the total heating power (W) given to the rod if convection is the only mode of heat transfer and the surface temperature of the rod is not to exceed 75 C (b) Repeat part (a) if the only mode of heat transfer is thermal radiation. (c) Repeat part (a) if the mode of heat transfer is both convection and thermal radiation. (d) What percentage of total heat loss in each of the parts (a) to (b) is the heat loss from the two ends of the rod?
