Question: air has a lower thermal conductivity than fiberglass batting or...

Question details
air has a lower thermal conductivity than fiberglass batting or almost any other common insulation material used in construction and thus would seem to be a better insulator than anything you might add to fill the gap . Yet we are exhorted to insulate our houses by putting insulation in these gaps between the studs. Is this exhortation merely a scam perpetuated by the construction and energy industries or are we overlooking something in this simple calculation? What assumption is made about the air?
