Question details

An excerpt from your elearning:

The significance of the early years in terms of their impact on children’s later success at school and life chances was summarised in a research paper commissioned in 2008 to inform the development of the EYLF. The research paper listed five key areas and linked them to key principles:
Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia

Read these five statements;

1. Recognition of the significance of the early childhood period regarding young children’s brain development, and the impact of the formation of relationships and experiences on learning. ‘Brain research shows us that the first three years of life are the most critical’ (Victoria State Government, 2008, p. 3). The report linked this research area to Principle 1: ‘Significance of early learning and the importance of building strong early relationships’.

2. Improving life chances, which is based on research in the USA and UK showing that learning outcomes are optimised when adults play an active role in children’s learning. The report linked this research area to Principle 2: ‘A more active role for adults in children’s learning during play’.

3. Quality early childhood education impacting upon later school success demonstrated the benefits of focusing on fostering concept development. The report linked this research area to Principle 3: ‘A greater focus on concept formation within early learning contexts’.

4. Better outcomes for children when learning contexts are engaging, responsive and stimulating emphasises the importance of interactions and sustained, shared thinking between educators and children. The report linked this research area to Principle 4: ‘The importance of engaging, responsive and reciprocal learning relationships with children’.

5.Better outcomes for children when learning contexts are mutually constituted through families and professionals working together stresses Australian diversity and that ‘maximum learning occurs when professionals and families work together to find out what matters within communities’ (Victoria State Government, 2008, p. 5).

Now: In your own words, think about what you have learnt up until now and provide a brief statement about each of these points.
Here is an example for number 1 to get you going:
