Bloodstain Analysis
Ross M. Gardner Gardner Forensic Consulting Lake City, GA Abstract: This study sought to define the size of the smallest parent stain produced by gravity-induced drips (also known as LVIS, pas- sive spatter, passive drops, venous drops). It examines four typical crime scene substrates (linoleum, cloth, tile, and carpet) and three mechanisms of droplet creation (knife tip, nail tip, and hypodermic needle) First, the minimum volume necessary to produce a drip was exam- ined. This volume appears to be 008 ml. The resulting stains produced by thesc volumes were no smaller than 3.9 mm in size Using the three drip mechanisms, stains were produeed on the four typical crime seene surfaces. The minimum size of stain when consid- ering all surfaces (including carpet) was 3.0 mm. Excluding carpet, the minimum size of the stains was 4.0 mm Introduction Case-specifie questions often serve as a catalyst for rescarch issues; this short study is no different. In the course of a shooting investigation, a bloodstain pattern (Figure h was observed on the jeans of a suspect. The stain consisted of a comples grouping involving two distinet stain patterns apparently overlying cach other. The first discrete stain pattern included at least nincteen small stains, 2 Io 3 5 mm in sizc: All indieated a consistent
