Consider a solid shaft of 2.5 mm diameter supported on two bearing at A and B (see the figure below). The shaft also has two helical gears mounted at points C and D. The gear at C applies an axial axial compressive force of 300N which is balanced by the tensile axial forces of 100 N and 200 N at bearings A and B. The gears also apply a torque of 100 N.m between points C and D, as shown in the figure. The shaft is further subjected to transverse forces of 600N and 1200 N at points B and C respectively. Determine the likely critical location (along the length of the shaft as well as around the cross-section of the circular shaft) where the stress is highest.
