Question: consider the following ethical problem jane works as a programmer...
Consider the following ethical problem:
Jane works as a programmer at a large technology company.
She has noticed that their software shows an error when people with non-Roman letters in their name try to use their product - for example Sørina or François.
Most of the time, people try again by using a different letter (Sorina, Francois).
Jane doesn't think it's fair that people from different countries should have to work around this problem, but after reviewing the code she has discovered that it would take months of work to solve, with no obvious benefit to report to her superiors.
If Jane follows a utilitarian ethics framework, should she:
- report the problem to her superior
- alert the general public
- ignore the problem
- quietly fix the problem, or
- take another action?
