Question: dear fellow tutor when factoring a polynomial like this one...

Question details

Dear fellow tutor,

When factoring a polynomial like this one:

18s^2 + 54

it is = 18(s^2 +3)

But why is it not 9(2s^ + 6) as 9 is the GCF?

For some questions eg. 8m^3 + 14m^2 +6m

the factored form is = 2m (4m^2 + 7m^ + 3)

So my question is why did my teacher use 18 instead of 9 which is the GCF of 18, 54? And why did my teacher use the GCF for the second example, even though both problems were under the same category on the same page under the same instruction of (factor each polynomial)? And how do I recognise the difference?
