Genetically modified microorganisms are frequently used in metabolic engineering as host organisms to express therapeutically relevant proteins. However, a key requirement for the growth is the presence of humid and oxygenated environment. In one process, the environment is achieved using a gas stream produced in an evaporation chamber. The input streams to the evaporation chamber are liquid water, moist air, and pure oxygen. The flow rate of the liquid water is controlled using an electrically controlled needle valve. The mol% of moisture (water vapor) in the input air is 0.8%. The ratio of the molar flow rate of the input moist air stream to the pure oxygen stream is maintained at a value of 5. The oxygen is maintained at 33°C and 5 psig. If the control signal to the needle valve is at a value of 286 volts and a single product stream leaves the evaporation chamber at steady state with 4.17 mol% water, solve the material balance to find the molar flow rates of the input air as well as molar and volumetric flow rates of oxygen. Then choose the correct answer below. Ideal gas behavior for oxygen and 1 atm ambient pressure can be assumed. Also assume that dry air (i.e. air with no moisture) contains 79 mol% nitrogen and 21 mol% oxygen.
