I need help with corroborating my calculations.
In order to calculate the theoretical yield, the limiting reagent must first be determined. In this experiment, the limiting reagent is tert-Amyl alcohol because it has the lowest mol per coefficient ratio.
Balanced formula of the acid-catalyzed dehydration reaction:
CH3CH2C(OH)(CH3)CH3 –––> CH3CH=C(CH3)2 + CH3CH2(CH3)C=CH2
m(2-methyl-2-butanol) = 0.82 g/ml x 3.0 ml = 2.46 g
2.46 g CH3CH2C(OH)(CH3)CH3 x ( 1 mol CH3CH2C(OH)(CH3)CH3 / 88 g ) ≈ 0.0279 mol
= 28 mmol / 1 = 28mmol
From the above balanced equation, 1 mol of 2-methyl-2-butanol produces 1 mole of 2-methyl-2-butane (expected mayor product). Therefore 0.028 mol of 2-methyl-2-butanol must produce 0. 028 mol of 2-methyl-2-butene. (Stoichiometry 1:1)
Theoretical Yield in mol = 0.028 mol
Theoretical Yield in grams = 0.028 mol x 70.135 g/mol product ≈ 1.96 g
Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield = 1.46 g / 1.96 g = 0.7448 x 100 ≈ 74%
