2.104 The device shown in Fig. P2.104 is used to investi- gate the hydrostatic force on a plane rectangular surface. The tank is tilled with water to a depth h and the force R (applied at the location indicated) needed to open the rectangular gate is measured. Values of R and h obtuined experimentally are shown in the table below. Use these results to plot a graph of the force R as a function of the water depth. On the same graph plot the theoretical curve obtained by equating the moment that the ap- plied force produces about the hinge to the moment that the resultant water force produces. Compare the experimental and theoretical results and dis- cuss some possible reasons for any differences between them.
