Your Relational Stage

This exercise is designed to give you a clearer insight into a close relationship in your life as well as practice with Knapp's stages of relational development (pages 283-291).

Reflect on a significant relationship in your life. While this works best with a significant other, you can also choose a close friend or even a family member. In your post, answer the following:

  1. Describe the present stage you believe the relationship is at. Give one or two specific examples which supports this assessment.
  2. Do you think that you are likely to remain in the present stage of this relationship, or do you see movement into another stage? Why or why not?
  3. Are you satisfied with the current stage? If yes, then describe what you can do to maintain the status quo. If no, then discuss what you can do to move towards a more satisfying stage.
  4. Now take the viewpoint of the other person in the relationship. How do you think they would describe it? What role is their behavior playing in contributing to the current stage? Please help me, experts, I would greatly appreciate it.
