In this next procedure, you will trace the pathway taken by oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules through the respiratory tract and through parts of the systemic and pulmonary vascular circuits. When you have completed your tracings, answer Check Your Understanding question 4 (pp. 603-604). Part 1 You are a molecule of oxygen floating happily through the atmosphere when all of a sudden you are inhaled by Ms. Magenta. 1 Trace your pathway through Ms. Magentas respiratory tract beginning in her nasal cavity to the point at which you cross the respiratory membrane and enter the pulmonary capillaries. Start:
2 T race your pathway from Ms. Magentas pulmonary capillaries through the blood, beginning in the pulmonary circuit in her lun (liver cell). You likely will have to review Unit 18 (p. 469) for some help with this. Start: gs, going through her heart, then through her systemic arteries to your final destination in a hepatocyte End Part 2 While in her hepatocyte, you notice that a molecule of carbon dioxide has just been produced. 1 Trace the carbon dioxides pathway from Ms. Magentas hepatocyte through the systemic veins to her heart, then through her heart to the pulmonary circuit, and finally through the pulmonary circuit to her pulmonary capillaries. You will likely need to review Unit 18 (p. 469) for some help with this. Start: End Trace the pathway of the carbon dioxide molecule from the pulmonary capillaries through the respiratory tract to the point at which it exits from Ms. Magentas body through her nares.
