Part A: Glossary of Acronyms

 

You were advised by your teacher to make a glossary ofAustralian (preferably Victorian) acronyms and terminology at the beginning of the course that will build your knowledge of how to communicate effectively in an educational environment.

 

You are now to select 10 acronyms from your list (it is advised you use the ones discussed in class) that you will need to know when working in an Educational Environment.

 

List the 10 below and in your own words, briefly explain your understanding of each one.

Brief Explanation:

Students doing VCE must do SACs in order to get their VCE. These are completed at school and are corrected internally.

 

Part B:  Research Project

 

As part of your role in Education Support you will need to deal with many internal/external customers from different backgrounds to yours. You will need to follow policies and procedures to ensure you are complying with organisational and legal requirements.

 

Anti – Discrimination Policies: 

Identify one type of legislation that deals with anti-discrimination in Australia.

1) What is its full name and briefly explain what it is for? 
2) List five things people can be discriminated against within an educational environment.

Locate a school policy that promotes access and equity within the school. (This may be a policy you found from the school you selected for Task 1)

 

3) What is the name of this policy? Describe how this policy ensures that internal and external customers are treated equally within the school?
4) List three ‘limitations’ a student may have. For example:  Student is in a wheelchair.
5) Explain how each one above could affect the student’s ability to a fair education? 

For example: Unless the school provides ramps and lifts the student would not be able to physically attend and is denied equal access.

6) List three things you can do at work to ensure you are respectful of the diverse ability of students, colleagues and customers?

 

 

 

The school you chose in Task 1 might have many students that come from many diverse cultural backgrounds. It is important that you are aware of these differences to ensure effective communication and minimise conflict within the workplace.

Research a Cultural Background different to yours and answer the following questions:

7) What is the name of this culture? List three things about this culture that is different from your own. 

For example: This culture believes it is not respectful to make continuous eye contact when communicating.

8) How can knowing this information help you to communicate more effectively within your support role? 

For example: Knowing this allows me not to get offended if I see them looking away. I will try not to stare too much when I talk to them.

9) We are not always perfect. Briefly explain a time when you have been frustrated with someone because they were different to you (that is, they were from a different culture or had a disability, or there was a big age difference and so forth). What was it about them that affected the way you communicated with them? Why do you believe you reacted this way with them? 
10) Looking back at the situation, would you now do things differently? Explain your answer.
