QUESTION 4 A concentric cylinder viscometer can be used to measure the viscosity of liquids. In this instrument, the liquid sample fills the gap between two concentric cylinders; both cylinders have a wetted length of h. The outer cylinder (radius Ro) is held in place while the inner cylinder (radius R) rotates at an angular velocity of w (rev/min) and the torque (T) required to rotate the inner cylinder is measured. 2 a. Draw a neat, labelled diagram of the process. b. Starting from Newtons law of Viscosity, derive the appropriate equation for the liquid viscosity (H) in terms of the variables w, T, Ro, R, and h SOME HINTS TO HELP i. You may neglect the end effects and simply focus on what is happening in the middle of the viscometer. You can assume that the velocity profile is linear in the gap between the cylinders (reasonable as long as the distance between the two cylinders is much less than the diameter of the cylinders) ii. ii. Torque is the product of force and moment arm which is R, in this case. For a viscometer with Ri = 12 cm, Ro = 12.15 cm, and h = 40 cm, determine the visc fluid if a torque of 0.036 N-m is required to rotate the inner cylinder at 500 rev/min C.
