Practicing “I” language.
Reflect on a few situations you’ve had recently where you may have intentionally (or unintentionally) used a “you” statement to someone important in your life. For example:
“You’re always so self-centered!”
“You never let me finish when we talk!”
“You’re always so rude to me!”
Likely, you made these statements out of frustration with a particular behavior. Unfortunately, “you” statements tend to promote defensiveness in the long run and typically only solve the problematic behavior in question for the short term.
For this exercise, please complete the following:
Part 1 (10 points)
Select three “you” statements you have made to people recently (if you’re stuck, you can pick one that someone’s said to you). Utilizing concepts from chapter five, reword these into “I” statements. Your initial post should include the following:
- The three “you” statements you’ve made.
- Your attempt at reframing them as “I” statements. "Interpersonal Communication Subject"!
