Problem 5. (Bonus) Consider a mass-spring system which is subjected to drag. The drag force is proportional to the velocity of the mass squared (Fa 2), and acts in the opposite direction of the moving object. The equations of motion for such a system takes the form: where m is the mass of the object, Cdrag is the drag coefficient, and k is the stiffness of the spring. Suppose that a harmonic force is applied to the system, ie. F(t) -Fosin(ut) for cases when cdrag << k, m, it can be shown that the particular solution of the system approximates a harmonic finction: where X is the amplitude of the response. Find an expression for the dissipated energy (per cycle) in terms of the parameters: X, w, and cdrag.
