In 1974, Italian Professor of Pharmacology, Dr. Cesare Sifori, was studying a patient from Limone (a small town in northern Italy) who had sky-high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in their blood. He expected to find cholesterol-clogged arteries and coronary artery disease in this patient, but there was no sign of either. So, despite these high levels of cholocstetol and triglycerides, this patient was somehow in no danger of the risk of heart attack and stroke so closely associated with these high levels. In this regard, this human was different than most! Dr. Sifore recognized that unusual circumstance invited further study. He tested blood samples of pretty much everyone in Limone and conducted a genealogical study to see how folks were related. It turns out that there were 38 folks in town with high cholesterol and beautifully clear arteries. It also turns out that they all descended from Cristofo Pomavoli and Rosa Giovanelli, a couple from the 1780s who apparently passed on n to their offspring through the generations. This simple mutation in this familys DNA causes a protein formed by their liver and small intestine to be a little different than in every thus offering protection from cholesterol-related heart attack and stroke. one else.
