Spring Design Problem: You have a big clothespin like tool
holding on to a cable, where the center of it is loaded with a mass
m (5 kg) as shown in the diagram.
Design a torsion spring (finding k, leg length, etc...) and
determine the required torque to be applied to each of the both
arms of the tool to prevent the tool from slipping from the cable
and falling.
Remembering that the holding force (Fh) will be related to the
normal force generated by the clamping force and the friction
coefficient of the surface of each arm (assume friction coefficient
μ is 1.05). And that the holding force must be equal to or larger
than the weight of the load (or m*g).
Show all equations and explanations needed to design the torsion
spring with its center in the pivot point for both of the tool’s
arms.
