      Steam having a quality of 99% is flowing at a temperature of 150°C through a 6 meter long steel pipe of 5 cm ID, 6 cm OD, covered with high temperature insulation having a thermal conductivity of 0.11 W/(m K) and a thickness of 1.2 cm. The convective heat transfer coefficient at the inner wall is 500 W/(m2 K) while the heat transfer coefficient at the outer surface is 17 W/(m2 K), and the ambient temperature is 16°C.

(GIVEN: Thermal conductivity of 1 steel pipe (ks) = 43 W/(m K))

i)  Sketch and label the thermal circuit of the system.                                                                    

ii)  Determine the total resistance of the system.                                                                           (Ans: 0.1204 K/W)             

iii) Calculate the heat loss from an insulated steel pipe.                                                                (Ans: 1.113 x 103 W)
