The inside dimensions of a laboratory furnace are 60-cm long, 40-cm high, and 80-cm wide. The walls are made of 2.5-cm thick firebrick, followed by 5-cm thick glass wool, and covered by 3-mm thick steel plate. With a power supply to the furnace of 1700 W, in steady state conditions, it is found that the outer surface 2-1 temperature of the steel plate is 60 °C with the surrounding fluid at 20 °C. (a) Is the temperature distribution in the wall one-dimensional?. If it is not one- dimensional, what are the reasons for the departure from one-dimensional tem- perature distribution? (b) Assuming all outer surfaces are exposed to the surrounding air, estimate the convective heat transfer coefficient between the steel plate and outside air. Assume that the convective heat transfer coefficient is uniform on all surfaces.
