The Mach number is a dimensionless parameter relating an objects velocity to the speed of sound. The speed of sound can be computed using the ratio of specific heats k, the gass specific ideal gas constant R, and the absolute temperature T. The Mach number is important as different flow regimes (subsonic M<1, sonic M-1, supersonic M>1) contain different physics which must be included in the problem at hand. For instance, a ball thrown from a baseball pitcher would be subsonic and be analyzed much differently than a supersonic aircraft due to fluid compressibility factors. Consider the following: 2) A commercial airliner has a cruising altitude of 25,000 ft and a speed v of 550 mph. Determine the Mach number (Ma) and verify that Ma is a dimensionless quantity. Compare the Mach number ofa commercial airliner to that of a Heinkel He 178 turbojet plane (developed in 1939) which had a cruising altitude of 15,000 ft and a speed of 380 mph.
