The three following isomers are possible products of a dehydration reaction:
a. Write the mechanisms from 1-Phenyl-1-propanol to each of the above products (show the carbonium ion and the possible rearrangement that can lead to the three products).
b. The UV spectrum for two products is identical to the UV spectrum of styrene. This eliminates one of the above products. Which isomer does it eliminate? Explain.
c. The two products were degraded via ozonolysis . In both reactions, one of the products was formaldehyde. Will the ozonolysis of alpha-methylstyrene and the ozonolysis of alkylbenzene yield the same product? If so, what is it?
d. Is there a spectroscopic method to differentiate between the three possible dehydration products?
