Question: treat 125g sample of nicl2en2 in 10ml water with 2...

Question details

Treat 1.25g sample of [NiCl2(en)2] in 10mL water with 2 drops of pyridine followed by 1.0g 2,4-pentanedione dissolved in 10mL MeOH. Reflux the mixture gently for 2h. Allow the solution to cool overnight, when large well-formed crystals should appear. collect the solids by filtration and wash the product with 1:1 MeOH/H2O.

(i) Identify the product and draw its structure. What is the role of pyridine in the reaction?

(ii) Why can the product be characterised by NMR pectroscopy, whereas [NiCl2(en)] cannot? what does this tell you about the coordination environment?
