 Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness The stigma associated with Mental Illness has often been called a barrier to treatment. Assessment one is asking you to examine ideas in terms of the history of the stigma of Mental Illness. How it does present as a barrier to care? How is this being overcome from an Australian perspective? Is the work around stigma reduction effective? The Task: Using up to date literature (a minimum of 10 individual citations) and no more than 1500 words respond to the above questions. In your response some things to consider may be: • History and prevalence of mental health in the general population • The number of hospital admissions each year for mental health issues and how this differs from past treatments of Mental Illness • Public awareness campaigns. • Other areas to also consider include: • Current and past suicide rates • Response to care • The impact that the Recovery Approach has had on treatment.
