Water is used to extract sugar from 50 tonnes/h of sugar beets. The beets have the following composition by mass: 48 wt% water, 40 wt% pulp, and 12 wt% sugar. The sugar syrup leaving the extractor contains 5 wt% sugar and no pulp. Forty-five per cent of the sugar in the original sliced beets is recovered in the syrup. The residual beet stream leaving the extractor contains 3 tonnes of sugar syrup (sugar + water) per each tonne of pulp.
a) Draw a flowchart of the extraction process.
b) Calculate the flow rate of each stream in tonnes per hour.
