You have been asked to investigate the impact of the presence of a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) pool found at the bottom of an aquifer. The pool is composed of nearly pure methylene chloride, which has the properties (@ 25 °C) listed below: ρ = 1400 kg/m3, vapor pressure = 0.46 atm, Henry’s H = 0.118, KOW = 1.3, Water Solubility = 20,000 mg/L. Give a qualitative estimate of the relative distribution of methylene chloride among the solid, liquid, and gas phases at each of the five sampling points shown. An example answer would be: S>> CL > Cg. Note that in some cases one of the concentrations will be 0. Give a brief explanation of your analysis for sample points 1 and 5. For sample point 5 a partially quantitative estimate is possible with appropriate assumptions. Note: Φ = porosity (counts both water and gas phase), Θ = 0.10 = θ, which is soil moisture content (volume basis) (see note 5/2).
